Woman hit and killed near 'U' campus

Updated: 08/17/2006 12:34:56 PM VIDEO | Print Story | Email to a Friend A University of Minnesota student was killed Thursday morning after being hit by a truck, according to Minneapolis Police. She was riding a bike at the time of the accident. The name of the 20-year-old woman has not yet been released. The accident happened at the corner of University Ave. and Washington Aves. SE, near the U of M campus, around 6:30 a.m. Police tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the woman was trying to take a left onto University Ave. when she was hit by a truck going eastbound on University Ave. Witnesses tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the truck was speeding. The driver stopped immediately and ran over to the the victim, witnesses said. "Both of them had yellow lights," said witness Edmond Henry. "He didn't have enough time to stop at all, she just darted right out in front of him. You could tell the driver was real distraught about it." Police said that the driver was not drunk or on drugs and will not likely face charges. Police also believe weather may have played a role in the accident.
